How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?

S-1:

Effectiveness

  • How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?
On average, three treatments of the same area are needed to achieve the desired results. Depending on the person and condition of the hair, more treatments may be necessary. However, most people rarely need more than six treatments unless hormonal imbalances or other factors prove to be an issue. No laser hair removal machine is able to provide permanent hair removal. Most lasers are only able to result in significant hair reduction. This means that some percentage of the hair will often grow back. In patients with white or blond hair, complete regrowth is likely within about a year. In patients with dark hair and light skin, hair will be significantly reduced, but some hairs that were in the dormant phase may become active following treatment. This will result in partial hair regrowth in between the monthly sessions. Generally, after the completion of a standard treatment, hair will be kept at bay for up to 2 years. Annual maintenance sessions may be necessary to deter full regrowth.

Tips and Warnings

  • Laser hair removal increases the skin's sensitivity to sunlight, making it more prone to sunburn and sun damage. Thus, it is best to undergo treatments during the colder winter months and avoid sun exposure at all costs. Moreover, exposing laser treated skin to sunlight can result in significant discoloration and sunspots that may be permanent. Also, be aware that laser treatments can be somewhat painful especially in more sensitive areas such as the underarms or bikini area. Some people find that it helps to rub numbing cream on the area before treatment to dull the pain.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?

S-2:

Laser hair removal is quickly becoming the method of choice for the removal of unwanted hair. Most of us have little time to spare, and are too busy to deal with an on-going need to pluck, shave, wax, use depilatories, etc. Thus we are brought to the question: how long does laser hair removal last?

The amount of any hair regrowth after laser hair removal will vary from person to person (but hair regrowth occurs less after laser hair removal than any other method). If and when hair regrowth occurs, the client generally goes back for additional sessions. From that point on, the time it takes for hair to regrow should take longer, after each consecutive session.

Some clinics offer "no hair regrowth guarantees", which means they'll do additional treatments on you within a stated
amount of time, for no addional cost. Some offer as much as a
3 year guarantee. Become familar with your clinic's offer before you sign a contract.

Shop competively -- but make sure any clinic you are considering is reputable, and has been in business at least a few years. Investigate the clinic's past client reviews and feedback by "Googling" the clinics name, city and the word "reviews".

Keep in mind that at times unscrupulous competitors will leave false negative reviews. But if you see many negative reviews for a clinic, from a number of different sources, that may be a red flag to find another hair removal provider.

It will take around four treatments (on average) to obtain the best results with laser hair removal. After that, many patients  will end up with permanent hair removal. But as stated above, some may find that additional treatments are necessary to get rid of their unwanted hair once and for all.

Unfortunately, there are those who'll find that laser hair removal has little or no effectiveness. In general, this is due to their hair being of too light a shade, or from a lack of enough difference between their skin and hair color.

How Many Sessions for Laser Hair Removal

For those considering laser hair removal, one of the most important considerations is the number of sessions required to achieve ideal results.  Every body and skin type is different, so naturally, the number of sessions can vary from person to person.

When you investigate laser hair removal options with a clinic, they will recommend to you a number of visits for your skin type.  But before you step into a clinic, you should understand how these determinations are made.

How Well Your Skin and Hair Type Respond To Laser?

Before getting laser hair removal, it’s important to know whether your skin and hair type is likely to respond well to the treatments.  During treatment, a clinician targets the shaft of a hair follicle with a laser, directing concentrated light at the root.  The laser targets pigmentation, so the darker the hair, the better the result.

Pigmentation, though, is not only found in the hair, but in the skin as well.  Those with darker skin tones may find laser hair removal more challenging, requiring more visits.  New technologies have widened the spectrum of people who can benefit from laser hair removal.

Those with white, blonde, grey, or red hair should consult with a clinician as to whether laser hair removal will be effective.  The less pigment there is to attract the laser, the less effectiveness of the treatment itself.  There is a possibility that laser hair removal will not be an option for you, but it never hurts to check!

Those with the ideal combination of pale skin and dark hair will often achieve the best overall results.  Those with darker skin tones and dark hair also typically achieve great results from the procedure.

How Many Sessions To Achieve Best Result?

The number of visits you’ll need to achieve your best results depends on your skin and hair type, as we’ve covered, but also depends on the area that you wish to target.  Larger areas will naturally take longer.  Facial hair may only take three treatments, while larger areas, such as the bikini area, could take between three and six session.  Legs typically will run to six treatments as well.

Hair Loss Journal found that, in general, between four and six sessions are needed to achieve 80% overall hair reduction.  The Mayo Clinic, on the other hand, use the figures of six and eight sessions, and project anywhere from 20% – 80% hair reduction.  Clearly, the Mayo Clinic is a bit more cautious in their estimates, but your best bet is to consult with one or more clinics on your individual case.

Facial Laser Hair Removal

Facial hair is one of the most problematic forms of body hair to have. It can be noticeable and embarrassing, especially if you are female. On women, facial hair tends to grow on the chin, upper lip and cheeks.  Men can also be troubled by their facial hair and can be unhappy with their eyebrows and beard. This hair can be easily and effectively treated with laser hair removal.

Nostril Hair Removal

It is also possible for you to have excessive nostril hair removed using laser hair removal treatments, but many practitioners will be reluctant to this carry out.

Forehead Laser Hair Removal

Women may have some hair growth on their forehead and this may be removed with lasers. For some, the fine baby hairs around the hairline may be unwanted and others may not have a clear divide between the eyebrows and the hairline.

Male Facial Hair Removal

As well as their eyebrows, many men are unhappy with the hair growth on their beards. Laser hair removal can be used to help tidy up a beard and give a clearer defined line between the upper cheek and the start of the beard.  Due to the fact that men often have thick, dark beards, particularly Asian men, laser hair removal can work particularly well.

Advantages over other Hair Removal Methods

Other hair removal methods, like waxing and electrolysis, can be very painful and uncomfortable when they are used on the face. Laser hair removal is much easier to tolerate with regards to pain. Further, folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicle) and hair irritation are avoided by undergoing laser hair removal.

Dangers involved with Facial Laser Hair Removal

Lasers can potentially be very dangerous and have the ability to penetrate the skin deeply. They can cause retinal damage if they come into contact with the eyes, either through direct or indirect laser exposure. Eye protection, e.g. goggles, must be worn throughout your treatment, and these must offer wavelength specific protection for the laser being used. It is usually recommended that laser hair removal treatment is not carried out around the eye area, and many practitioners will not use laser treatment below the top of the eyebrow. Lasers are also dangerous in the wrong hands. Inexperienced practitioners handling lasers can cause serious damage and side effects, such as burns, pigment changes and scarring.

Suitable Laser Treatments on the Face

The most suitable candidates for laser hair removal on the face, are those with light skin and dark hair. Treatment can also be effective on darker skin but not all lasers can be used on every skin type. All forms of laser systems and IPL can be used on facial hair. Your practitioner will advise you on the best treatment for you, taking into your own specific needs into consideration.

Number of Treatments Needed for Laser Hair Removal on the Face

The number of treatments you will need is dependant upon your skin type and colour, and your hair type and colour. Your practitioner will advise you on the number of treatments they think you will need to get good long term results. Your treatment time for each session will be quite short as you would only be having a small area treated. Good results are usually seen if you are deemed suitable for treatment, but repeat treatments will be needed in the future. These may be needed once a year after your initial course of treatment, help to prolong your hair free results. The results vary from person to person but generally a 50-80% reduction in hair growth is seen after several treatment sessions.

Treatment Costs for Facial Laser Hair Removal

The cost of your laser hair removal treatment will depend upon the area you want to have treated, the amount of hair growth present, the type of treatment you choose, and your chosen practitioner. The general prices for one treatment on various facial areas are:

Full face:  £100 - £130
Upper Eyebrows: £40 - £60
Chin: £40 - £60
Upper lip: £40 - £60

Information about Laser Hair Removal

laser hair removal

Process

  • During laser hair removal, doctors use light beams to harm hair follicles so that they cannot grow hair. They usually place the laser on the skin so that the beams of light can get to the hair follicles. Laser hair removal can be used to get rid of hair on the face, back, underarms, legs, bikini line or chest.

Frequency

  • People normally have to get between four and six laser hair removal treatments before areas of their bodies are completely free of hair. They may also need to get additional treatments to keep hair off certain areas, according to the Mayo Clinic. People with dark hair and lighter skin tend to need fewer hair removal treatments than people with other hair colors and skin tones, according to an article by Mitchel Goldman for the Consumer Guide to Plastic Surgery.
  • Before and after laser hair removal treatment, patients must stay out of the sun and avoid tanning booths. They can shave but should not wax. A tan could cause blisters or skin irritation after going through laser hair removal, according to the Mayo Clinic. After getting the procedure, patients should wash the designated area with soapy lukewarm water and apply antibiotic cream to it.

Risks

  • As a result of laser hair treatment, people can develop hyperpigmentation, a discoloring of the skin, infections, rashes, skin irritation, blisters or scabs.

Purchase the Tria laser hair removal device to be used at home. You can purchase it directly from the website or at department stores. The price is from $795 to $995, depending on where you purchase it.
    • 2
Use a razor to shave the hair from the area to be treated with the laser device. For the laser device to work as effectively as possible, only use it on skin that has been freshly shaven. Slightly grown hair will prevent the diode light from finding and targeting the hair follicle inside the dermis.
    • 3
Clean and dry your skin before you use the laser at home. Apply some baby powder to the area to be treated to absorb excess moisture from the skin. Laser hair removal systems work more efficiently on skin that is moisture-free.
    • 4
Adjust the heat settings on your laser. There are three settings to choose from: low, medium and high. The highest setting will yield the best hair-removing results. If the highest setting is too painful, start out on low, then gradually go higher as your skin adjusts to the sensation.
    • 5
Press the laser device against your skin, allowing the diode laser to penetrate the hair follicles. Move the device a few millimeters after every light pulse to cover as many hair follicles as possible. Continue doing this until you have sufficiently applied the treatment all over the desired area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply some numbing cream to the area to be treated to dull some of the pain.
  • Do not use the laser on broken or damaged skin. Do not go tanning or in any way expose your skin to the sun following the laser treatment.

Laser Hair Removal Cost?

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

Physical pain is one thing, but for most people, the question How much does laser hair removal cost? is a bigger factor in deciding whether or not to get treatments. The stinging sensation will pass quickly. A big credit card bill will not.

Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer to questions about laser hair removal pricing. If someone tells you treatments cost $400-500 on average, they wouldn’t be lying to you exactly. However, there are so many factors that go into the price that this information is practically meaningless.
Laser Hair Removal Cost

Factors involved

Here are some of the things that determine how much laser hair removal costs:

  • What part of your body you’re having treated: Generally, the smaller the area that’s being lasered, the lower the cost. So if you’re having your back done you can expect to pay more than someone getting their back treated (all else being equal, of course).

  • What sort of provider you go to: You’ll pay more if you go to a plastic surgeon or dermatologist than if you go to laser treatment center or spa.

  • The part of the country you live in: People in Long Island don’t pay the same as people in Santa Monica, who don’t pay the same as people in Minneapolis. In general, the higher the cost of living in your area, the more you will pay for laser hair removal.

  • The number of treatments you need: You typically need a minimum of four treatments, but the provider you work with may recommend more. Or it may depend on your progress. Before scheduling your service, you may want to ask the provider if they offer “touchup” appointments in case you need them after your regimen is done, and if so, how much they cost (they’re generally less).

  • Provider differences: Just like every other industry, 5the service providers set their own prices. If you go to someone with a great reputation (which we recommend), that person is likely going to charge more.

The last thing:

We don’t recommend skimping too much when it comes to a cosmetic procedure, even one as safe and established as laser hair removal. Perhaps the question shouldn’t be How much does laser hair removal cost? but rather How much does the best laser hair removal in my area cost? The best way to answer that question is to ask around.
